🛑 Stop Bristol Airport Expansion
Phase 1: Picnic & Aerial Photo
Saturday 15th June 6 – 9PM, Durdham Downs.
[SCHEDULE UPDATE FOR TODAY’S PICNIC & PHOTO SHOOT]
The Downs BIG XR human extinction symbol “NO AIRPORT EXPANSION” aerial photo shoot is going ahead as weather apps say it’s going to have finished brightening up by 4 – 5PM today 🌦️ 🌥️ 🌥️🌤️🌈🌞.
But as grounds will probably be wet for 5PM picnic, there is a slight change of plans in schedule:
- 6PM assemble for 6.30PM photo shoot
- 7PM picnic (or pub)
We’d really appreciate if rebels can arrive at 6PM to make sure we get the photo as quickly and in the best conditions possible (it will take a bit of time to coordinate everyone into position).
Decision for picnic or pub will be made on-site considering real time conditions of the ground (and on participants’ preference).
Weather forecasts say there will definitely not be rain after 6PM and only 40% chance of rain between 2PM and 5PM.
We look forward to seeing everyone later!
✈️❌ Stop Airport Expansions: Let’s Create the Largest Extinction Symbol Made by Humans Up To Date ✈️❌
Come and join us at The Downs on 15th June from 6PM for a picnic (or pub afterwards depending on conditions) where we’ll create a huge extinction symbol ⌛ (using our bodies), that will be captured in an aerial photo, to send a clear message about the true scale of the opposition to this disastrous plan. ✊
This is a family friendly Extinction Rebellion event so everyone is welcome 👪 💚.
We invite everyone to bring picnic blankets, vegan food, placards, banners, love and music.
Please spread the word: talk with family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and strangers.
BRISTOL AIRPORT EXPANSION PLANS
Despite both declaring a Climate Emergency, Bristol City Council and North Somerset Council are forging ahead with plans to expand Bristol Airport. 🚨🚨🚨
Bristol Airport currently handles around 8 million passengers per year and is planning to expand to 12 million passengers, expecting to increase to 20 million by 2030. ☠️☠️☠️
This not only means increasing carbon emissions from flights by 50% and then by 250%, but it makes the goal of our city becoming carbon neutral by 2030 totally unrealistic. 🏭
United We Stand for Our Children’s Future
By raising our voices alongside groups of normal citizens (e.g. Stop Bristol Airport Expansion Group), we’re taking a stance to protect present and future generations as well as giving our support to the Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate movement, who specifically demanded in their last school strike on Friday 24th May, for authorities to not go ahead with the expansion.
It’s our youth’s future at stake. 🚸

Spread the Word
Please spread the word and help us make the largest extinction symbol made by humans up to date ⌛⌛⌛. Talk with family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and strangers.
By peacefully uniting in large numbers we’ll show the national government and local authorities that airport expansions are not the will of the people of Bristol.
The symbol will be marked out on the ground, and we will all be able to lie down within it to create a giant human symbol of our resistance.
What’s After Phase 1?
This will be a very powerful image that will support the lobbying efforts already taking place by XR activists and other community members towards North Somerset Council to Stop the Bristol Airport Expansion.
If the local and national authorities choose to ignore us, actions will be escalated at a further date.
Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (owners of the airport – Facebook page): please take note, respect the will of our community and withdraw your expansion application.
